Definition :
Helping readers or viewers to understand more information that might not be in photos or videos.


Rule of Writing a caption :
• Supply specific information (Answering 5W1H Question)
• User present tense on the first sentence
• Caption are written in a complete sentences
• Clearly identify the people and location in the photo
• Identify the person from left to right


How to a write caption text?
1. Observe the picture or video you will give the caption
2. Find out the message that will be sent from the picture before you write caption
3. Write sentence or phrase under the picture

Procedure for Writing Caption

From the examples of captions above, of course, it can be seen that in writing captions it is not arbitrary. There are several ways to write the caption. According to nwscholasticpress there are several things that need to be considered in writing a good caption that can be used as a complementary image, the procedure is as follows:

  1. In writing captions in English, it is not necessary to use article words such as a, an, or the. As much as possible use the simple Present Tenses so that the picture can be described.
  2. The information provided to the reader is not obtained just by looking at the picture.
  3. The text in the caption is only to complete the photo, not to replace the photo.
  4. At the time of writing text captions do not need to start with a name.
  5. When writing text captions that indicate an individual, the word "from left" can be used instead of "from left to right".
  6. When writing text in the caption, there is no need to write clear words, such as "Above" and "Pictured here".
  7. In mentioning the name in the caption, if the name is really important.
  8. Writing a good caption in English can start with several variations of the words below:

  • Prepositional phrases
  • Infinitive – phrases
  • Participial phrases
  • Adjective phrases
  • Questions
  • Exclamations

The things above that need to be considered in writing text on captions, although some of the tips that have been given cannot be used as a benchmark in writing captions for one photo, there are some that need to be adjusted based on the context of the photo.


Example of Caption Question

In asking questions based on the given caption, you can use What, Who, Where, When, Why, and How.


Examples of simple questions and answers from the image above:

  1. What's happen between US and China?
  2. When was the picture taken?
  3. Where was the location in the picture?
  4. Who is the main subject in the picture?
  5. What kind of caption is in the picture?

Example of Caption Text :

Summary :
1. Social Function
Describe or command on a picture, photograph, graph, chart


2.Text Structure
Can be:
- action/event/ activity -people/thing that involved condition


3. Language Features
- Noun Phrase for a thing, a person, an animal, a location, etc. which is focused on, with or without a, the, this, those, my, their, etc.


- Verb Phrase dealing picture/photograph/graph/chart spelling, punctuation, and handwriting
